The Virgin Mary from Immaculate Conception to Our Lady of So

Please join the co-curators of the University Art Museum’s inaugural retablo exhibition as part of Labor: Art & Motherhood in 2020 for a virtual curators’ talk and exploration into the history of the UAM’s Mexican retablo collection on June 27th at 1 PM MST. Co-curators Professor Silvia Marinas-Feliner and NMSU graduate student Courtney Uldrich will discuss their methods in curating an exhibition in connection with motherhood, and exploring the importance of the Virgin Mary as one of the most exemplary models of motherhood. This exhibition is the first time the retablos have been displayed since the 2000 exhibition El Favor de los Santos: The Retablo Collection of New Mexico State University. With a recent donation of over 200 retablos by renowned retablo specialist and conservator Gloria Giffords, the UAM Permanent Art Collection now houses 2,000 nineteenth-century retablos, the largest such collection in the United States. Discussion will also include the history of the collection at the UAM, and a behind-the-scene look at the process of accessioning the recently acquired retablos into the collection.

MAMA Create-Ups: Carving Out Time For Your Art (Passions)

In this workshop authors of The Motherhood of Art, and creators of the Carve Out Time for Art program, Heather Kirtland and Marissa Huber will present on the importance for artist moms to set aside time for themselves, even in small increments. Kirtland and Huber will share tactical tips, encouragement, and personal struggles from themselves and the other artist mothers who shared in The Motherhood of Art. The impact of COVID has shifted many people’s lives, similar to the role of a new mother, and many artist mothers have now been tasked with new roles of teachers on top of their already heavy schedules. Finding a little time for art or creative hobbies can be a helpful outlet to help people process emotions and anxiety, and Kirtland and Huber will be sharing prompts and ideas to get people started or encouragement to continue to dedicate time for creative passions. This event is geared for anyone that is struggling to find time to create: parents, full-time professionals, artists that have taken a break and are looking to return to their practice, or had it figured out and are struggling again staying home during COVID. A Q&A session will be led at the end of the presentation, encouraging further discussion and interaction by the audience.

The University Art Museum at NMSU will be presenting a new exhibition titled Pasos Ajenos: Social Justice and Inequalities in the Borderlands and Saint Joseph and the Laborers  to run in accordance with Sorry for the Mess

Pasos Ajenos is motivated by current social crises and responds to the call for a deeper understanding of local history and complex relationships based on race, nationality, gender, and intersecting social statuses. The exhibit was created by Dr. Dulcinea Lara and Dr. Nicholas Natividad, professors in NMSU’s new Borderlands and Ethnic Studies program.
