OutsmART Children’s Program: Stop Motion Animation a workshop by artist/mother Sharbani Das Gupta

Saturday, August 15, 2020, 1PM (Online/Offline self-directed workshop)

This OutsmArt Children’s Workshop will be prepared by Sharbani Das Gupta an installation and sculpture artist who works with clay and other media. In this workshop Sharbani will demonstrate how to create a simple animation using playdoh, a pet rock, other commonly available materials, and a smartphone camera. The animation can then be completed by making a small flipbook or by using  simple online animation software.

If you do not have access to these materials, the UAM will be producing a limited amount of kits for local families designed for this project that will be safely prepared and sterilized, and can be picked up via drive-up on Saturday AM August 15th, between 10:00 -11:00 am MST in the University Art Museum parking lot located just outside Devasthali Hall on the east side. Please call 575-646-2545 for directions or for any questions. This panel will be moderated by Kimberly York, Interim Director of NMSU’s Black Programs.

On Saturday August 22nd, 2020, the UAM will host a live panel discussion about creative resources and experiences in the face of miscarriage, stillbirth, and vulnerabilities in pregnancy and childbirth. This important discussion will take place on Zoom, between writers Shannon Gibney and Kao Kalia Yang, co-editors of What God Is Honored Here: Writings on Miscarriage and Infant Loss by and for Native Women and Women of Color, Las Hermanas Iglesias, artists whose work is featured in our current exhibition Labor: Motherhood & Art in 2020 and educator, activist and author j wallace skelton. Through this panel, the discussion will aim to amplify information about pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and stillbirth within an intersectional and reproductive justice framework. This discussion will provide an important development of community between individuals who have experienced loss, and will provide a meaningful conversation for any persons who have felt disconnected and overwhelmed through their experiences. This discussion of loss will focus on representing writers’ and artists’ response to miscarriage/stillbirth, as well as the important discussion of full spectrum reproductive justice for Black, Indigenous, People of Color and LGBTQ+ communities. There will be time at the end for Q+A from those attending the event, and all members of the event are invited to participate in a group discussion.

ALONE/TOGETHER is a curated series of online Saturday programs created by the UAM in collaboration with artists and programming partners from Labor: Motherhood & Art in 2020 (Labor). The series will be fully online, utilizing an array of social media and online apps the global community is now becoming even more familiar with in this new world of social distancing.
