Online Plant Making Workshop with Justin Favela

Online Plant Making Workshop with Justin Favela

To kickstart the events leading up to our spring exhibition Sorry for the Mess, the University Art Museum at New Mexico State University is excited to announce that we will be hosting a Plant Making Workshop with artist Justin Favela live with Zoom on Thursday, December 3rd, 6:00 PM.

During the workshop, Justin Favela will teach community members and children how to create piñata-style paper sculptures for a desert garden that will be integrated into Sorry for the Mess. This live interactive event will also be recorded and posted on the UAM website for individuals to access after the workshop. After the workshop, the UAM will accept sculptures dropped off at the museum during open hours from December 3rd, 2020 – January 6th, 2021; sculptures will be included in Sorry for the Mess, January 21- April 3, 2021. Community members can pick up their “artist plants” to take home after the exhibition.

The UAM will be producing a limited amount of kits for local community members designed for this project that will be safely prepared and sterilized, and can be picked up via touchless drive-up on November 21st, 12:00-4:00 PM. These materials can also be purchased/sourced if you cannot access our kits. Here is a list of the materials you will need to take part in the workshop from home: Card stock (2-4 sheets, preferably shades of green), brown tissue paper, scissors, cardboard (for plant pots, recycled plastic cups, bottles, or fruit containers will also work), glue (sticks or bottles) and stapler. Extra materials/alternative materials: pipe cleaners, hot glue, crayons, markers, and paint. The University Art Museum parking lot located just outside Devasthali Hall on the east side. Please call 575-646-2545 for directions or for any questions.

Justin Favela, born in 1986 is a Las Vegas native and alumni of UNLV. Favela works primarily in large scale installation and sculpture. He has exhibited his work both internationally and across the United States. His installations have been commissioned by museums including the Denver Art Museum in Colorado and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. He is the recipient of the 2018 Alan Turing LGTBIQ Award for International Artist. Favela hosts two culture-oriented podcasts, “Latinos Who Lunch” and “The Art People Podcast.”

Sorry for the Mess

Sorry for the Mess

The University Art Museum will be presenting a new exhibition titled Sorry for the Mess running from January 21 through April 3, 2021. This new exhibition will include works from artists Justin Favela and Ramiro Gomez. The highly successful Las Vegas based exhibition is being presented at the UAM, as it engages with unseen labor and narratives of the artist’s hometowns; as well as the commonality of these themes that affect and shape our local Las Cruces and regional community. Much of the exhibition will be brought directly from Las Vegas on loan, but will also include an interactive site specific piece created by Justin Favela specifically for our iteration of the exhibition. Opening night will feature an online “Directors Discussion” with Sage and Alisha Kerlin, executive director of the Barrick Museum of Art at 6:00 PM via Zoom. To register, visit https://nmsu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYscOmqqD0uHtEbKZBBLtVmg7H7aIKzX1B3.
