Eric LoPresti Aikido Performance #2

As part of the exhibition Superbloom, please join us for an Aikido performance by Eric LoPresti, Paul Forhan, Head instructor of Aikido of El Paso and Octavio Pina, from Aikikai Las Cruces. This performance will take place at 1:00 PM in the University Art Gallery and is free and open to the public.

In the wake of the US bombings of Japan in 1945, Japanese combat institutions, including all martial arts dojos, were shut down. Imported in the US shortly after, the relatively modern martial art of aikido survived by transforming itself from, in the words of its founder, “one strike from aikido can kill” to “the way of harmony.” Eric LoPresti started practicing aikido 25 years ago, and this practice has subtly but profoundly influenced his artistic direction.

OutsmART: Today's Kids / Tomorrow's Artists: Shadow & Contra

OutsmART is a series of Saturday interactive children’s art workshops exploring the power of art in their everyday lives.  All ages and experience levels are encouraged to attend. However, this workshop may be most beneficial for children 5-15.  Parents and guardians are invited to come to the classes.

Each workshop will be related to artwork exhibited in the university gallery.  In the past year, participants have learned about traditional art practices, for example, making mosaics and monoprints, but have also tackled more conceptual topics like propaganda in art, cultural stereotypes, environmental issues, and even participated in performance art.
