Campo Compound Gets Facelift
(Façade Squad Dollars to be spent on Campo Street)

Las Cruces- In May of 2019, Downtown Las Cruces Partnership (DLCP) was one of six recipients statewide to receive the Emera/New Mexico Gas Company (NMGC) Economic Development Award. These funds support economic development community projects and build jobs in New Mexico. The six communities and the associated awards are: Artesia MainStreet Inc. $5,000.00, Clovis MainStreet $10,000.00, Raton MainStreet Inc. $5,000.00, Barelas Community Coalition $7,000.00, MainStreet de Las Vegas $8,000.00, and Downtown Las Cruces Partnership $5,000.00. New Mexico Gas Company and Emera believe in supporting the communities in which they serve, and it is their strong hope these contributions will bolster the efforts that New Mexico MainStreet agencies are making in furthering economic development in New Mexico.

DLCP with collaboration from the Las Cruces Arts and Cultural District (ACD) has taken the money to improve the façade of the Campo Compound, which currently houses EyeConic Records, Atom Bomb Studio, Creative Harmony Gallery, and several apartments. As a gateway into the Mesquite Historic District, the clean-up of this property is significant to downtown and the ACD. David Chavez, Chair of LCACD said, “This is an efficient and cost-effective way for communities to make high impact, visible improvements to the district. We are excited and motivated to complete this project.”

The façade squad projects assist private property owners with front, street-side façade renovations. It is also a volunteer-driven, "bootstrap," self-help effort that involves local MainStreet organizations, property and business owners, civic organizations, and municipalities. “We are thrilled to receive this grant and to be able to employ professional architectural and design services from New Mexico MainStreet. While also organizing resources, materials, volunteers, and local property and business owners to execute a façade improvement project on one block in our district in one workday,” said Jennifer Garcia Kozlowski, Executive Director of DLCP.

The compound located on North Campo Street between Las Cruces Avenue and Organ Avenue is owned by Leslie Skaggs. The property has already been refurbished in preparation of the painting. The painting of the buildings will take place on Friday, November 22 and Saturday November 23 at 10am both days. DLCP is still accepting volunteers to help paint and clean up the compound. These are neighborhood driven projects that cannot be completed without the help of our local community. DLCP thanks LCACD, Sherwin Williams, NMGC, New Mexico MainStreet, and New Mexico Economic Development Department for their tireless help in moving this from a vision to an action that we all can enjoy.
